Publisher and developer Whitethorn Games has announced a turn-based RPG Whale fall for “major consoles” and PC (Steam). A Kickstarter campaign to fund development of the game is now live.
Here’s a preview of the game, via its Steam page:
Set in the ancient world of Osfeld, Whale fall takes place in an original fantasy universe where gentle wandering beasts roam the skies. Once in a century, a whale’s life naturally comes to an end, and they fall gracefully to the ground in the Baleen Wastes, where conflict soon ensues over their precious remains.
This time it’s different. The Stoneshield Legion, in a vain attempt to restore the long-lost Iron Chain Empire and take control of all of Osfeld, have taken matters into their own hands. The evil Queen Lucretia and her Stoneshield engineers have, with the help of the Faceless, designed a huge bloodstone cannon and brought down an unthinkable celestial whale!
The cataclysm of the crashing beast plunges Osfeld into chaos and plunges Coty, a young rookie, into an impossible situation at the head of the Riverwatch Forces, the last stronghold of the Skygazer Nations, who previously lived in peace among the bison ranches. .
Recruit friends, make enemies, build romances, fight, level, customize, and explore your way through a three-act indie JRPG from Whitethorn Games, and end the tyranny of the Stoneshield Legion!
Whale fallSquad-based small environment combat takes the form of a traditional Japanese role-playing game (JRPG). The turn-based combat, move selection, character gear, leveling, and customization will feel familiar to fans of the genre, yet accessible to those who have never played it. We have tried to balance accessibility and usability of paper mario with Bravely Default’s dynamic, snappy camera movements and tense combat. A unique preparation system rewards strategic thinking and anticipating enemy moves rather than just using the most powerful abilities!
When diplomacy fails and military force is required, it’s time to deploy the Riverwatch Forces. Commanding armies means moving groups of units across a hex-based battlefield in order to rout enemy forces, capture a fort, or simply defend Riverwatch. We tried to combine the tactical and territorial depth of fire emblem with the moments of suspense and tension of the Suikoden series.
It wouldn’t be a Whitethorn game if you couldn’t smooch, and in that regard we’ve packed Whalefall to the gills with a fully fleshed out visual novel-inspired story, featuring over ten hours of fully voiced dialogue throughout a cast of over two dozen unique characters. Visit the tavern and make friends to build your relationships like with games like fire emblem while simultaneously learning more about the characters through level and cutscene banter from games like A brave omission. Experience the three-act story of the bloodstone cannon destroying the celestial whales, and make friends and foes along the way.
Along the way, you will discover…
- Pitches – Visit over 30 unique, hand-modeled locations on the continent of Osfeld with an art style reminiscent of lost spear and A brave omission.
- Races – Meet the diverse races that call Osfeld home, from the avian warrior clan Korvil to the reclusive and intelligent Moldoon, and maybe even a talking tomato or two.
- Characters – Featuring a dozen fully voiced, interactive, playable, and romantic characters, plus a host of other NPCs and support staff that complement the game’s massive cast.
