Skull Session: Dwayne Haskins was like a brother to Buckeye quarterbacks, Ohio State linebackers shine in the NFL, and TBBDBITL reveals halftime show

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Word of the day: cudgel.

BIG BROTHER. Justin Fields didn’t really have a relationship with Dwayne Haskins before coming to Ohio State. And with Haskins leaving for the NFL, it would have made perfect sense had they never developed that relationship.

But that’s not what happened. Haskins welcomed the heir to his throne with open arms and became like a big brother to him.

This is yours now, Fields remembers Haskins telling him.

What Haskins really meant on that April day was that the shot to lead a loaded Ohio State roster in 2019 was there for Fields. What neither of them may have acknowledged at the time was that Haskins was leaving him a legacy.

“I’m not going to lie, he kind of started something,” Fields said as he returned home from the Bears’ offseason program on Tuesday. “You can tell he did. We’ll never know if I would have gone to Ohio State if he wasn’t there, but you can give him credit for starting something. I was thinking about this the other day, and saw something online – before him, there wasn’t really an elite passer at Ohio State for years before.

“I think he started this elite passing group with, of course, him, me and now CJ [Stroud].”

Even though Haskins had already declared for the draft, he hosted Fields weekend on campus, introducing him to his girlfriend, taking him to a basketball game with former coach Urban Meyer and making him visiting a campus he’s never seen as a rookie prep.

“If I’m going to be honest with you, before that we kind of talked, but we didn’t really talk a lot,” Fields said. “It seemed like when I was there, we knew each other our whole lives. He was so cool, so welcoming. I think that’s where our relationship turned into a more personal one, we got to know each other better. And he became like a big brother to me.

Haskins was absolutely the OG in turning Ohio State into arguably the modern QBU. And he was more than happy to lead this group even after his time in Columbus was over.

BIG BROTHER. Justin Fields wasn’t the only Buckeye quarterback to follow in the footsteps of Dwayne Haskins, or call him big brother.

Haskins also played this role for CJ Stroud.

CJ Stroud called him a big brother.

After taking over as the starting quarterback for Ohio State last fall, Stroud found an encouraging mentor in Dwayne Haskins Jr.

It was only three years earlier that Haskins made a similar starting debut with the Buckeyes, filling the top job and dealing with all the demands placed on passers.

Therefore, he had plenty of advice to give Stroud by phone and text.

“It meant a lot to CJ and to me,” said his mother, Kim, “that he was already in his NFL career and he would come back and give back and talk to CJ and make sure to give him a part. of this wisdom.”

Stroud also treasured his friendship with Haskins because, even in high school, Stroud had looked up to his deceased predecessor.

In fact, Haskins was one of the reasons he was drawn to the state of Ohio growing up more than 2,000 miles away in Southern California’s Inland Empire.

It says a lot about Haskins’ character when several guys who only came to Ohio State after he left both call him “big brother.”

It also gives us a little insight into what it’s like to be the starting quarterback at Ohio State — it’s special, and there are only a few guys on the planet who can truly relate and empathize. And these guys stick together.

WHAT ABOUT THESE BUCKEYE LINEBACKERS? So it turns out that Ohio State’s 2020 linebacking lineup was pretty darn good.

It should be noted that Pete Werner also had the highest run defense rating of any rookie since 2014, and was the best player in the league against the run this season.

It’s kind of crazy how there was this narrative in 2019 and 2020 that veteran linebackers weren’t that good and were just preventing some of the younger guys from having a chance to shine.

Meanwhile, these guys are playing in the NFL while Ohio State just traded two linebackers mid-season after being beaten by a running back.

ROUND ME THIS… Folks, it looks like Saturday’s halftime show is absolutely going to rock.

Because I like to have fun, I’m not going to spoil this riddle for you. But if you’re confused, I’m sure you can get help in the comments (or in the Tweet replies).
