March Madness 2022 predictions: College basketball expert picks, odds, lines for Sweet 16 Thursday games

It’s time to make a confession here before we get to Sweet 16’s picks: March Madness a do not been my month. The good news is that our expert picks are back in action today ahead of Thursday’s Sweet 16 fun! — features more than your real one. Gary Parrish, Matt Norlander and Chip Patterson are all radiators in this second wave of tournament action, and David Cobb also had a nice little run.

So if you want to follow their picks instead, I completely understand. Or if you really want to win a bag, it looks like fading me might be the real decision. That choice is yours when you check out our picks below.

Anyway, to prepare you for the first day of the second week of the tournament, I’ve once again summoned our experts to make straight and against the spread picks to help you choose your support (and, hopefully making cheddar along the way). You can also check out our expert supports or our third round reset supports.

Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the month for NCAA Tournament coverage through the end of the Final Four. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for Thursday’s final third-round matchup slate.

NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16 Picks

(1) Gonzaga vs. (4) Arkansas

Thursday, 7:09 p.m. | CBS, March Madness Live: Gonzaga hasn’t covered in four of his last five games, including his two NCAA Tournament games. Arkansas, however, has covered the spread in 20 of its 35 games this season and is 4-1-0 ATS as an underdog, according to TeamRankings.com. The 8.5-point line seems like a reasonable number to clear for a Razorbacks team that can win a shootout or a slugfest and has the personnel to adapt favorably to the Zags. Choose: Arkansas +9

(2) Villanova vs. (11) Michigan)

Thursday, 7:29 p.m. | TBS, March Madness live: Villanova currently looks like the strongest remaining No. 2 seed in the squad. That’s not saying too much – two of the four such seeds are already home and the other, Duke, looked vulnerable – but it counts for something. This Wildcats team coached by Jay Wright is old, experienced and plays very well. Their advantage in the backcourt should outweigh their disadvantage in the frontcourt by a margin large enough to cover the gap. Pick: Villanova -5

(2) Duke vs. (3) Texas Tech

Thursday, 9:39 p.m. | CBS, March Madness Live: What feels as an underdog game, this is not the case in the eyes of bettors. Texas Tech, the No. 3 seed, allows 1.5 points to Duke, the No. 2 seed, in this West Region game. And I’m sleeping him with the Red Raiders. Their defense is fierce and the overall game for Duke is a nightmare to prepare for even with several days left. Choose: Texas Tech -1.5

(1) Arizona vs. (5) Houston

Thursday, 9:59 p.m. | TBS, March Madness live: Arizona had to work overtime to deal with TCU in the second round, and it really struggled with the way the Horned Frogs crushed the offensive boards. That’s especially concerning against a Houston team that ranks as the third-best offensive rebounding team of all college hoops. But it’s an area I suspect Tommy Lloyd and his Wildcats staff will be ready to fight for before Thursday. If it comes down to talent as I suspect, I like that Zona gives the points. Choose: Arizona -2
