Kevin Harvick calls for NASCAR to shorten Cup Series races: ‘I don’t think any of us want to run 500-mile races’

Much has been said about the duration of NASCAR races this year.

After last month’s race in Atlanta lasted nearly 4 hours, and last weekend’s Martinsville race was shortened by 100 laps for the first time, many are calling on NASCAR to scale back many of the 500-mile races that have become in a basic element. on the Cup Series circuit.

well it counts Kevin Harvik as someone who hopes the 500 miles will become the exception rather than the norm on the Cup Series schedule.

During an interview with Frontstretch’s Davey Segal, Harvick had some pretty strong ideas about whether the Cup races should be shortened:

“Outside of the Coca-Cola 600, and I think that’s probably going to be a debate as well, what people need to realize is there’s going to be a lot more precautions. It’s not the races we’ve had in recent years with a limited number of cautions.

There will be a lot of warnings as we have seen in all these races. I don’t think, from a driver’s point of view, that any of us want to race 500 miles anyway. 500 miles in Atlanta with the restrictor plate, it was a long day. It felt like we were there forever.”

Kevin is right about the precautions. Since NASCAR implemented stage racing, each race is guaranteed to have at least two cautions at the end of each of the first two stages, which will automatically make the race longer.

And as any NASCAR fan will tell you, warnings beget warnings, so when you rally the field for a restart like NASCAR is doing at least twice a race, that presents more of a chance for another caution to pop up and slow the race down even further. plus. plus.

That’s not to mention the increased number of warnings we’ve seen this year with the implementation of the new Next Gen car. And at longer tracks like Texas Motor Speedway, caution laps (obviously) take much longer than they do at shorter tracks.

So are there any races that should probably be shortened? Absolutely.

But even Harvick agrees that there are some breeds (well, at least one) that should be left alone:

“I think the Daytona 500 obviously has to be 500 miles. And Coca-Cola 600 could be up for debate. But the rest of these races, they shouldn’t even be allowed to have 500-mile races. They seem like a thing of the past to me.”

This isn’t the first time Harvick has pushed for shorter races. In 2017 Harvick argued on his radio show that only the “crown jewel” races need to be 500 miles (or more):

“I think the 500-mile race is a long time. I think with stage racing and the stuff that we have now and the attention span of what people want to see, I think there should be the Coke 600, the Daytona 500, the Southern 500, the crown jewel events should have those distances, and I think everything else should be shorter.”

But Harvick isn’t the only driver who thinks Cup races are too long. Truck Series driver Hailey Deegan also took to Twitter this week to argue in favor of cutting some laps from Cup racing, arguing it would help keep younger fans’ attention with shorter attention spans. :

Obviously, nothing is going to change this season, but with the amount of people talking this year, don’t be surprised if NASCAR goes out of its way to shorten some of its Cup Series races in the future.
