DraftKings F1 DFS: How to Play Formula 1 Fantasy Racing

F1 DFS Preview

Formula 1 racing is a different beast. It’s an ever-changing puzzle every week, seeing what style of course they’re racing, checking course history, how the cars run and what changes the teams have made to the setups during free practice sessions. This How to Play NASCAR DFS article by Awesemo writer Phillip Bennetzen offers a deeper look at the ever-changing puzzle.

In 2021, the F1 world had a new world champion: Red Bull’s max verstappen. He was able to dethrone the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamiltonwho had won four consecutive drivers’ championships.

Mercedes has won eight consecutive constructors’ championships since 2014. Ahead of the 2021 season, only Ferrari was able to come close to 100 points behind the world champions in 2018. In 2021, the Red Bull team was able to win more races than Mercedes and finish just 28 points behind the Constructors’ trophy.

Mercedes seemed to be moving away from its competition in the late 2010s, but regulations were put in place to try to level the playing field. These regulations have already started to apply over the winter break and fans should expect closer racing from a wider range of teams this year, not just the standard Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari teams.

You may be thinking, okay, but how does that help me in Formula 1 Fantasy? While the less-than-casual fan will look at previous standings and think only that Mercedes will walk away with another trophy this year, teams like HAAS, Alfa Romeo, Williams and Aston Martin had extra time this offseason to work on their car. and make improvements, which have already been seen in early spring testing.

DraftKings F1 DFS Roster Construction and Scoring Details

While many DFS fans may have had a taste of NASCAR, F1 Fantasy scoring is drastically different. For starters, the lineup is a mix of Showdown style with a twist. Your roster will be made up of a Captain position, which will give you 1.5x the points but cost 1.5x the price. Then the rest of his F1 DFS roster will be rounded out by four more drivers and a Constructor.

The Constructor is the team that races the two drivers. There are only 10 constructor teams, as each team has two drivers on the grid. Your choice of Builder can make or break your entire day. While you can’t include both the drivers and the Constructor team, i.e. include Hamilton, george russelland the Mercedes Constructor, you can choose to include two of the three selections above.

There is a criterion when looking at your controllers. Can your high-end drivers win? What is your starting position after qualifying? Will they finish in the top 10 for points? And will they beat their teammate?

All of these questions should guide your builds, and the last question is a huge one for the value pieces in your lineups. Sure, everyone would love to be able to lock up Hamilton, Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and the Mercedes Constructors team and then go on from there, but doing so will leave you picking from the bottom of the barrel.

The Formula 1 weekend is unlike any other. There’s Free Practice 1 earlier on Friday, then three hours later Free Practice 2 takes place. This is where the teams will test their car setup and make sure they’re ready for Qualifying. Saturday.

On Saturday there is a third free practice session to polish all the final specifications of the car and finally we have qualifying, which starts exactly 24 hours before the race scheduled for the following day to provide similar racing conditions. Qualification is also a beautiful thing. It is organized in three stages eliminating the five slowest drivers from each stage until the final 10 drivers fight for the front of the grid.

Because DraftKings prices come out well in advance of qualifying, taking advantage of qualifying results will be huge for your DFS builds. It’s pretty simple, but starting near the top of the grid, more specifically on the front row, gives the driver a much better chance of winning.

Setting your lineup on Thursday and forgetting about it will only set you up for disaster. The main news you need will be out on the Saturday after qualifying is over, so trying to play again on Saturday night or Sunday morning before the race is a clear strategy.

Types of fantasy Formula 1 tracks

There are three types of tracks you’ll see in F1 DFS: There are the “proper” circuit racing tracks that were designed for races like Silverstone in England or Monza in Italy. Street circuits like Monaco and Singapore are run on public roads. While the third is a hybrid mix of circuit track and street racing like Abu Dhabi.

Each track has its own special features. Being aware of the track, or the type of track, means you understand:

  • The probability that drivers will blow/make 90% of the race for the bonus
  • Potential to be lapped if running near the back
  • How difficult or easy it is for drivers to pass or be passed
  • How many lead changes to anticipate
  • Drivers I would expect to lead at least 10% or more of the race
  • Observing that some drivers and cars run better on specific tracks compared to others

How to win in Formula 1 Fantasy Racing

As we do with all DFS sports, we absorb the information and then make our lineups based on various factors.

The key factors that will be helpful are:

  • Course/track variables
  • Practice results for lap times
  • Grid position (starting) on race day
  • Builder team strategy to stack with your best driver or for team exposure
  • Ownership and where to pivot

Being able to have a good mix of the above criteria will allow you to build strong lineups that have the advantage of earning GPP.

While you may be used to seeing 350+ points in the NBA or 175+ in the NFL, DraftKings F1 Fantasy Racing points are much lower than your average sport.

If you were to look at the previous year’s scoring using the DraftKings points system, the top drivers were Verstappen, who averaged 27.9 points, and Hamilton, who averaged 24.7 points per race. Meanwhile, more than half of the drivers averaged less than 10 points per race, with many averaging less than 5 points per race.

On the Constructors’ scoring side, the Mercedes team averaged 36.2 points per race, while the Red Bull racing team averaged 36. Once again, half of the teams averaged less than 11 points per race, which It is a big difference.

Verstappen’s peak performance came with a 41.1-point run at the Grosser Preis von Osterreich GP, while Hamilton did not exceed 37 points all season.

The Red Bull team was able to produce six races with 50+ points, while the Mercedes team also had six races with 50+ points. For comparison, there were only 14 times in total where a Constructor scored more than 50 points, the 12 mentioned above and a 60.9-point performance from McLaren and a 50.6-point performance from the Alpine team.

Picking a top Constructor team that can have two potential drivers on the podium is vital to winning in GPP.

While there may only be 20 cars on the grid, you rarely see a Grand Prix winner break out of the front two rows. In 22 races in 2021, 16 of the GP winners started from the front row (1-2), three came from the second row (3-4), one came from the third row (5-6), one from the fourth row (7-8) and Hamilton won the Brazilian GP after starting from tenth position on the grid.

Starting on the front row is crucial to a driver’s success and roof projections.

Hopefully, you were able to soak up some of the Fantasy F1 information and get a better idea of what to expect when the DraftKings F1 DFS contests kick off.
