Everything we know about Apple’s next foldable iPhone

There’s nothing wrong with the current iPhone design. In fact, you can argue that he’s almost perfect at this point. Of course, you have the pesky notch at the top of the display, and while I thought it would be an eyesore when Apple first announced the iPhone X, it now fades into the background. But Apple didn’t get where it is today by resting on its laurels. On the contrary, Apple designers are always trying to cook up something new, and the next big innovation from Cupertino might just be a foldable iPhone, otherwise known as iPhone Flip.

Over the past few years, it has become apparent that Apple is actively exploring the development of a foldable iPhone. For starters, we’ve seen several patents that detail an iPhone Flip-style device. Second, credible reports indicate that Apple is already working with working prototypes. If you’re curious what a foldable iPhone could bring to the table, we’ve put together a compilation of some of the most credible iPhone Flip rumors.

There are two iPhone Flip prototypes

A little over a year ago, a report from the Daily economic news relayed that Apple is working with two iPhone Flip prototypes. The first prototype would consist of two vertical panels connected by a hinge. This design would open and close like a book.

To this design, famous Apple leaker Jon Prosser in 2020 said that this design does not have a notch. Instead, the design has a small front above the display that houses Face ID and other sensors.

“Even though they are two separate panels,” writes Prosser, “when the screens are extended, they appear quite continuous and seamless.”

The second iPhone Flip prototype more closely resembles the design of the Galaxy Z Flip. In other words, imagine a large iPhone that folds in half in the middle. Last month, Prosser said Apple was “leaning heavily” in favor of this specific design.

Specs remain unclear

It’s hard enough to figure out the specs of the upcoming iPhone models that we know are coming. It is almost impossible to determine the technical specifications of a product that may never see the light of day.

Still, a few small rumors about the iPhone Flip have emerged over the past couple of years. For example, credible reports have indicated that we can expect to see an iPhone Flip with an OLED display and a variety of different colors. We have also seen rumors that the device will have a decent sized display which will eclipse the Galaxy Z Flip.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, for example, said the device will feature an 8-inch display with a 3200 x 1800 resolution.

In light of this lack of information, it’s worth sharing some iPhone Flip concept designs that have sprung up in recent months. While it’s impossible to know for sure what the final design will look like, these concepts are certainly intriguing.

So when might we actually see an iPhone Flip hitting stores? Well, that remains the million dollar question.

It should be noted that an iPhone Flip is not necessarily a guarantee. Remember that Apple does not hesitate to invest heavily in a research project to cancel it suddenly. We’ve seen this play out with Apple’s HDTV.

To that end, it’s worth highlighting this quote from famous leaker DylanDKT:

For those curious about a foldable iPhone, Apple is definitely working and testing several prototypes containing foldable displays. However, too many compromises still exist with foldable display technology. There are also questions about whether foldable smartphones will continue to have a place in the market or fall into obsolescence. Therefore, Apple intends to carefully observe the market and improve the mistakes of its competitors. As other manufacturers iterate on products that are apparently in beta, Apple is keen to ensure the design isn’t a throwback to the current iPhone form factor. They are interested in playing the long game to see how the technology progresses.

At the earliest, analysts believe an iPhone Flip release could be in 2024. But as with all speculative news from Apple, you’ll definitely want to take this tidbit with a grain of salt.
