With the arrival of The Witch Queen, there is now a mission ending with us playing two truths and two lies with Savathun. One such statement is that the Hive would not be the last race to gain the Light. Now, while that may be untrue, it’s one of the things I state as likely to be true, based on Destiny’s overall story trajectory.
One of the biggest surprises (unless you call her like me!) was that Savathun hadn’t actually stolen the Light for herself, she had bowed down to the Traveler and she and her offspring were given the light. As such, as the Traveler fights for survival, it stands to reason that he could give Light to other races, as the Darkness expands its own influence.
So here are the candidates, and how likely they are to get the light.
Scorned/Taken (probability 0/10) – I put these two in the same category because they are essentially nothing more than puppets of darkness at this point. The Taken are more of an elemental force than a race at this point, and while the Scorns are used to dying and coming back to life, they are the primary agents of Darkness right now, and if anything, they will only get more deeply intertwined with new experiences putting worms inside Scorn instead of Hive now.
Vex (2/10 probability) – The Vex have been serving as agents of darkness for quite some time now, and given how they function as a race, it’s hard to imagine what the Vex would look like when they “gave the light.” They can’t die in the traditional sense, so why would you need a ghost to resurrect them? If I were the Traveler, I would be extremely careful to grant that kind of power to a race that would probably find a way to annihilate all existence, light and dark, if they got their hands on the one thing they have. still able to simulate.
Cabal (7/10 probability) – I mean, clearly at this point at least Caiatl’s collection of Cabal has proven that they are fighting on the ‘good’ side of things, although it’s not clear if the Traveler can resent being put in cage by Ghaul when the light been actually stolen from his chosen people (us). That said, with strong hints that Calus’ forces might be deeply involved in darkness and might be empowered by it, it may make sense to arm Caiatl and his army with the Light.
Fallen (probability 9/10) – I mean, at this point, the Fallen took their time. They even made “House Light” in honor of the Traveler. Mithrax, his daughter, and her friends deserve the light at this point, and back in Season of the Splicer, there seemed to be bits of lore that pictured Fallen gaining light powers. darkness already gave the Fallen stasis, so it looks like it’s the traveler’s turn to give them a reward for abandoning them.
One problem with that, though. While it might make story sense for Caiatl or Mithrax and their troops to get the light, from a gameplay standpoint we’d probably need to have a purpose. struggle Lightbringer Cabal or Fallen, the way we are with the Lucent Brood now. It’s weird enough to do this with the Hive when we’re all supposed to be on the same side against the Darkness, but how would that work with other races? Caiatl gets the light and becomes corrupted with the new power, and we fight her to get her back on track? I don’t know, that’s why writing games is hard. What makes sense for the story doesn’t always make sense for the gameplay on the ground. But we’ll see, and I think ultimately it’s a truth that Savathun is telling us.
