The DeLorean EV: Everything we know so far about the new take on the Back to the Future classic

In February 2022, DeLorean Motor Company announced plans to build a new version of the 1980s stainless-steel clad car made famous by its role as a time machine in the Back to the Future film trilogy. The new sports car will be an electric vehicle (EV). DMC (no connection with the original John DeLorean company which went bankrupt in 1982), which has spent over 25 years offering parts, service and restoration on the original gullwing door coupés, build the car in San Antonio, TX.

The new DeLorean, teased in its initial marketing as the DeLorean EVolved (although that’s probably not its official name), will be an all-electric sports car. DMC CEO Joost de Vries told Motor Authority the car will offer a huge 100 kWh battery to feed it a range of at least 300 miles. For context, the full-size Tesla Model S sedan, in its latest incarnation, uses a battery that’s about the same size (99 kWh) and hauls the 5,500-pound sedan up to 405 miles on a single charge. The new DeLorean, as a two-seat sports car, is likely to be considerably smaller and lighter, and as such could offer similar or perhaps even better range than the new Model S. depending on its aerodynamics and transmission efficiency. de Vries said, however, that the car would not reach 500 miles of autonomy.

Structurally, the new DeLorean will mimic Tesla’s “skateboard” designin which the electric motors are between the wheels of each axle and the battery is in the ground between the front and rear wheels, spanning the width of the car.

“You would assume that with most electric sports cars, all-wheel drive would be a must, as would a flat-floor battery,” Troy Beetz, DMC’s chief marketing officer, told Motor Authority. The custom chassis, meanwhile, will use a structural carbon fiber tub.

DMC isn’t giving performance numbers yet, but the company promises the DeLorean EV “will be a driver’s car, bringing back the fun of driving.”

Design and styling

All we have for now is the teaser silhouette image above. But we know the new DeLorean EV won’t be the same iconic 1980s Italdesign bodywork on a modern electric powertrain. In place, the 21st century DeLorean will have an all-new design it’s a yes, will use the same butterfly style doors as the original. And Italdesign, led by legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, designs this one, just as it did the original.

A design will be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Monterey Car Week on August 21, 2022. Price and release date

The new DeLorean EV won’t be cheap, which is a shame because it contrasts with the belief of John DeLorean himself, who wrote in his 1985 autobiography that he wanted more young people to be able to afford cars from sport, because he thought he should enjoy them. Either way, DMC told Motor Authority to expect pricing around the top-end Model S (the Plaid, which starts at $136,000 before options) and Lucid Air (only the Dream Edition). is currently available, and it starts at $169,000) on the low end, but below the cheapest McLaren (which is currently the 540C which starts at $185,000) on the high end. That puts the new DeLorean in the $175,000 range. For context, the original 1981 DMC-12 was $25,000, which in 2022 dollars is about $80,000.

As for its release date, de Vries told Motor Authority that it’s possible the first deliveries to customers could take place by the end of next year, but DMC is definitely aiming to have pre-production models on the road in 2023.
