Update: Another million dollars between today and yesterday, and the official Sonic Movie Twitter has confirmed that sonic the hedgehog 2 indeed had the biggest opening weekend of any video game movie, with a very healthy $72 million.
Original story: Well, it happened at the speed of light. Saturday it looked like sonic the hedgehog 2 The film would go on to gross around $65 million at the US box office. Now the numbers are in and the blue blur has broken the sound barrier and expectations.
Deadline reports that the sequel surpassed $71 million in the United States alone. That’s a lot of rings! Predictions have already noted that it was on track to beat the original film’s $58 million, but it completely destroyed it – and that’s all pretty impressive considering the first one. sonic the hedgehog film launched during President’s weekend in 2020. Although just before the start of the pandemic.
This means the sequel supersedes its predecessor and now has the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie. We can’t help but think this will culminate in big numbers for Sonic’s second big-screen outing, which sees Tails and Knuckles joining the fray.
Paramount Theatrical Distribution boss Chris Aronson had this to say about the film’s success:
“Sonic 2The record opening is a victory for Paramount and for the industry as a whole. The filmmakers have done an incredible job of making a film that both serves the legions of Sonic fans as well as general and family audiences. Developing a franchise is no small feat and having a +22% opening compared to the first film is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to the filmmakers and the marketing and distribution teams at Paramount for doing a fantastic job bringing the film to the global market!
Those aren’t the only impressive stats for the film, which grossed an additional $37 million internationally. In total, the film has grossed $141 million, also making it Paramount Studio’s biggest opening weekend since 2014. The Blue Hedgehog also puts it firmly Detective Pikachu back in his Poké Ball for the second time, which grossed just over $54 million in 2019.
It’s no surprise the film did so well, considering what our sister site Push Square had to say about the film: “The storyline is funnier, the action is more exciting, and the locations are more varied. and interesting. Respect for the source material can be found everywhere, too.”
The official Sonic Movie Twitter account joined in the celebrations as Sonic reigns supreme at the box office as they shared more video game-inspired art.
It’s a fabulous nod to the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 title screen, and we love it, but we have to wonder: what’s Paramount’s obsession with making Tails so grumpy?
These little nods suit the film, which makes so many homages and references to the video game series it’s based on. Sonic fans will have plenty to choose from, and it’s a lot easier than trying to get all seven Chaos Emeralds, that’s for sure!
We’re already going to have more Sonic movies, as the third movie has been in production since before the second hit, plus an entire Sonic Cinematic Universe, so there’s no slowing down for a chili dog-eating friend. Although Jim Carey, who has made Dr. Robotnik his own, is considering retiring from comedy altogether:
