To no one’s surprise, Sandalphon won the majority of votes in a landslide
Earlier this weekend, we saw the GBVS CyGames Cup 2022 special unfold to great fanfare, and while the focus was of course on all the hot matches between top Japaense Granblue Fantasy Versus players, these sponsored events often bring a little something in the way. new information for the game as well.
GBVS CyGames Cup 2022 Special was no different, and brought with it the news that new system mechanics coming to the game will be released in June, and that there will be three new mechanics in total, as well as another CyGames Cup underway in July. The part that caught everyone’s attention, however, was the discussion of the polls for which characters you want to see added to Granblue Fantasy Versus that opened in December – or, more accurately, the focus was based on the results of these surveys.
While there have been polls of a similar nature in the past for Granblue Fantasy Versus, what was interesting about this one was the fact that it wasn’t exclusive to Japan, which is the key market for the game as well as the mobile title it is based on, but that it was also open to the rest of the world, bringing in voting voices that may not have been heard in the past.
With that in mind, the results were presented by region – Japan, Asia and Oceania, North and South America, and Europe – and while they were quite similar in many ways, there were also some key differences.
Before we even dive into the poll results, however, it should be emphasized that popularity, i.e., good poll placements, will not guarantee a character’s addition to the Granblue Fantasy Versus roster. CyGames highlighted this by first showing a graphic thanking players for voting and explaining that there are many other factors that are also considered when adding new additions to the game’s roster ( such as potential playstyle, weapon representation, etc.).
This should hardly come as a surprise, as we saw exactly that happen in the game’s second season, where Belial, Cagliostro, and Seox were all hugely popular characters that topped the polls, while Yuel, Eustace and in particular Anre were more bizarre choices that players might not be as inclined to expect.
With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the polls themselves. You can check out the images below to see what the top 10 looked like for each region, including a list showing the results for each region side-by-side, making it easy to compare placements.

Obviously, the first point of interest is that Sandalphon completely swept the polls in all regions, although for people familiar with the source game this is hardly surprising. Sandalphon’s popularity has been immense ever since he was introduced to the lore of the game, and he actually also won the previous poll from 2 years ago.
With Sandalphon, it’s more a matter of “when” than “if” for his inclusion in the list, to the point where most are surprised he hasn’t made it yet. What’s interesting is to look at some of the other results, perhaps most notably Siegfried, another dragon knight from the currently playable characters Lancelot and Percival and Beatrix, a member of the Society alongside current selectable fighters Zeta, Vaseraga and Eustace.
The devs noted that many of the votes seemed based on wanting to see familiar characters interact with each other, which partly explains their votes, coupled of course with the fact that they’re both very popular. Given that Beatrix managed to reach the top 3 in all regions and Siegfried almost accomplished the same feat (finishing 6th in Asia/Oceania), they seem like very strong candidates to include based on their popularity.
The only other character to place in all regions is Seofon, the co-leader of the Eternals alongside the currently playable Anre, a group of which Season 2’s newest addition, Seox, is also a member. Ilsa, yet another Society member, and Vikala, the Rat sign representative of the zodiac characters, appear in the top 10 of 3 different regions, clearly showing a large fan base for both of them.
Additional candidates who may have a good chance based on the poll results we have are Aliza and Silva who ranked high in regions that previously could not have voted and who also hold the distinction of “interesting gameplay possibilities which CyGames highlighted as another factor of inclusion.
Silva is a gun-based character who is a straight-up sniper, definitely separating her from Eustace, the other gunslinger available in the game right now, and would likely be heavily focused on long-range zoning if it was added. Aliza, on the other hand, is a melee warrior princess and would likely fulfill the archetype of a close-up Kung Fu style fighter, much like Jam from the Guilty Gear series.
While the involvement of new characters being added was very clear (why even hold a poll, let alone publish its results?), there was still no clear statement as to whether this would be a continuation of DLC for Granblue Fantasy Versus or a move to a new project such as Granblue Fantasy Versus 2.
The lack of a sequel announcement, despite talking about characters fans want to add to the game, would pretty clearly point to the first one, but with next-gen consoles slowly making their way into the market space. , one has to ask to what extent it is feasible. is to continue to support the game in its current state, especially after the developers themselves admit that they believe rollback netcode should be standard for fighting games – a feature that current Granblue Fantasy lacks. vs.
Either way, this year will be packed with excitement and new content for Granblue Fantasy Versus in the form of updates, events, and most importantly, a place on the main stage at EVO 2022. More information and announcements will no doubt be available to us in the near future.
