The latest Intel Sapphire Rapids-SP Xeon processor with 56 Golden Cove cores has been discovered by Yuuki_ans. This chip is still an engineering sample, but it comes with much higher power numbers than those we discussed previously.

ES2 processors also leaked and we saw boost frequencies of up to 3.3 GHz, but this sample had a TDP of 270 W. The last sample should be Xeon Platinum 8476 or Platinum 8480 and rocks a total of 56 Golden Cove cores with 112 threads. The processor contains 112 MB of L2 cache and 105 MB of L3 cache. The processor was tested on an Intel C741 (Emmitsburg) platform with 1TB of DDR5 memory with CL40-39-38-76 timings.

As for clock speeds, the Intel Sapphire Rapids-SP Xeon processor ran at a base clock speed of 1.9 GHz and a boost clock speed of 3.3 GHz. The processor has a maximum single-core boost clock of 3.7 GHz. The power figures are where things get crazy as the processor running on the Socket E motherboard (LGA 4677) has a base TDP of 350W (PL1) and maximum turbo power (PL2) rated at an insane 420W. But that’s not all, the actual CPU power limit (enforced by the BIOS) is reported at 764W, which could be the case with AVX-512 enabled.

As for proper chip operation, the Intel Sapphire Rapids-SP Xeon processor can operate at 99°C, although we don’t know what kind of cooling was used to test this chip. Keep in mind that the load has not been applied to the chip. While early performance benchmarks look pretty decent compared to AMD EPYC Milan, the processor will launch at a time when Genoa is at its peak, and based on the power numbers here, things aren’t looking good for Intel in the efficiency department. We know the final samples will retain the power limits, but they might offer better thermal and power management than the engineering samples. But whether or not that’s enough to tackle AMD’s EPYC lineup remains to be seen.
