Let’s be honest, with its wonderful root beer-hued paint and boxy build, today Good price or no dice Element looks a lot like a cute little UPS van. We’ll take a closer look and see what this brunette can do for us.

Volkswagen is one of the largest automakers in the world, with manufacturing plants in nearly every corner of the globe and enough makes and models to occupy even a polydactyl cat in their count. This breadth and scope is perhaps why many of you dismissed yesterday’s report 1977 VW Ant, despite being one of the most punished and rare rides Volkswagen has ever made. At $19,900, few of you had anything to do with that rarity and opted to give the truck a 77% loss with no dice, which is all too familiar these days.

Hey, let’s pick another automaker and consider the fact that Honda really hasn’t let its weird flag fly lately. What’s up with that? Consider its range here in the United States. There’s the Civic line that’s going well, the Accord that’s going well, the Clarity and the Insight who are both beautiful hybridsso what four crossover wagon sizes that are all…well, very good.

The only real fantasy found in the Japanese automaker’s entire lineup is found in the Ridgeline, a pickup truck with a sassy attitude and plenty of fun hidden compartments. It wasn’t always like that. There was a time when Honda made cars and trucks that were not only good, but also funky.

Today 2007 Honda Element SC is a fine example of that old funkiness. And not only that, but it’s a rare edition (it still has that word) with a manual transmission and three foot pedals. That should make it not only funky, but also fun to drive.

Honda based the Element on the same Civic-derived platform as the CR-V, but gave the car its own distinctive style. In fact, with its boxy shape, suicide rear doors and front and rear plastic fenders, the Element stood out boldly from all of Honda’s contemporary offerings. As for that last styling cue on the Element, it wasn’t Honda’s first alliance with plastic fenders. The tiny CRX had had plastic front fenders since the ’80s. Only in this case Honda color-matched them to the rest of the car so you’d never know they were cast rather than stamped. In the case of the Element, Honda celebrated the composite composition of the fenders by shamelessly leaving them unpainted on early cars.

Later models like this offered painted fenders, but they’re still the same dent-resistant plastic. From 2009, however, the Element’s fenders were redesigned and switched to steel, eliminating one of the car’s funkiest features.

This one has the plastic fenders, the suicide doors and, being an SC edition, a few extra goodies. These include a slightly lowered suspension, projector headlights and a “tribal pattern” for the interior upholstery. On top of all that, this item also has 208,000 miles on the odometer.

Yes, that’s a lot of miles, but according to the seller, it’s no worse for wear and tear because of them, claiming:

I just had the service done. . Oil change, new sensors 02 . . No leaks. . I just got smogged. . It has never been damaged and has never been modified. . I just received new tires a few months ago. . This is a rare model and combination. . The clutch grips well and shifts smoothly. .

Curiously regarding that last item, the ad also notes that a new clutch is currently entering the car.

Cosmetically, this funky little Honda appears to be in decent shape with only a few noticeable bumps and warts in the photos. The interior looks a little tired, and honestly, the seller could have cleaned the cargo area a little better before taking the pictures because it looks like the birds spent the day pooping there. This is a fairly simple solution and could be negotiated before the sale if necessary. The title, on the other hand, is clean.

As I noted at the start, Honda doesn’t really make fancy cars like this anymore. In fact, it hasn’t been for years. It left a void in the lineup as well as in the hearts of those who love a funky Honda solution for themselves. Because nature and dogs abhor a vacuum, the result has been a steady increase in item prices over the past few years. This one’s asking for $6,950 and it’s one of the best equipped, only lacking all-wheel drive which, to be fair, wasn’t offered on the SC. Still, we have to decide whether it’s a reasonable price or not.

What do you say, is $6,950 a fair price for this funky brown wagon? Or, for this to be a deal, should that price be more basic?
