I am well aware that I am remarkably privileged to do what I do here at TTAC. I’m a car enthusiast, I get paid to go play with cars. Friends will often ask me what I’m driving this week, rather than the usual small talk about the weather. A touch of envy seeps into the conversation when I reveal that I drive a high-end luxury car or a powerful sports car.
Ultimately, however, I use whatever car comes into my driveway that week as my primary driver: first, to properly assess it for you, dear reader, and second, to steer cars away from my aisle. . But I’ll still need my own cars, because I have to get to my office for daytime work, and I don’t always have media lenders I can rely on. One of my own cars, however, will be reclaimed when my eldest turns sixteen in about a week – and my other car – a vintage Miata – isn’t particularly suited to year-round driving.
So that’s where my privilege comes in – I used this second career as an extended test drive to find my next daily driver. While these high-end luxury cars would be a nice addition to the fleet, frankly, they don’t pay me enough here. So, I’m looking for more affordable ways to get where I’m going – and something that offers thrills at a low price like this 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI might very well be the ideal choice.
