The reason given for today’s sale Good price or no dice Mazda B2000 is that it is a redundant member of the current owner’s stable. Let’s see if its condition and price are worth adding to a new owner’s collection.

A reputation is a hard thing to shake. Just ask the kid who has to live in high school after taking pants and everyone staring at the skid marks on their tights. In the case of last Friday Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti 2017, the reputation for unreliability—both of the model and of the dealer network that supports it—caused serious apprehension when purchasing it, even though, at $22,900, it was more than half its price. This was truck-truck here and truck-truck there, here a truck, there a truck, everywhere a truck-truck. And don’t get me started on Macdonald’s multiple Tuk-Tuk.

A similar problem happened to the seller today 1984 Mazda B2000 pickup truck. It seems that after driving the little truck all the way country from Sacramento, California, to the postcard-perfect Hudson River Valley in New York, the seller discovered that he already had a near-perfect Toyota pickup truck Mazda clone. Happens all the time.

This realization put the Mazda on the line and so today we’re going to see how it performs at its set price.

As most of us know, the B2000 was Mazda’s best-known small truck for spawning the Ford Courier, an offshoot that proved far more popular due to Ford’s larger sales and service network and advertising budget. The B2000 is pretty much the same truck with just a slightly different grille and a change for the name engraved on the tailgate. An earlier version also spawned a Rotary Engine Edition which we know as the REPU (Rotary Engine Pickup). However, no edition of this generation was offered.

Instead, this truck sports a 1970cc SOHC four with 89 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque. This all-aluminum grinder is supported by a five-speed shaft which in turn drives the dynamic trolley-suspended rear axle. According to the seller, the truck recently drove all the way from California to New York without any hiccups, and claims “If that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is.”

Now that he’s in his new home, he turns out to be redundant and so on. The ad claims it’s a three-owner truck that once spent time on an almond farm in California’s leafy Central Valley. This makes it a unique beast in the northeast as it is rust free and probably does not suffer from wear and tear on its horn due to overuse.

Cosmetically, the truck shows its age and its 183,000 miles across worn paint and a bench seat that needs not one but two covers to hide its shame. There’s also something weird about the interior passenger door handle as it has some sort of patch around it. Another problem is tIt has a clever but alarming cutout in the dash that doubles as a cup holder that we should also acknowledge.

Other than those quirks, it looks like you can’t go wrong with a truck like this. The seller claims it passed both California and New York emissions testing (spoiler alert: there about the same thing) and recently refreshed its brake pads and all fluids. On the other hand, although the truck is air-conditioned, the advertisement indicates that it is not working at the moment, but the seller assures us that it “just needs to be plugged in”. Um-hum.

The sleek Bronco bed cap comes with the truck and not only does its paintwork match the Mazda, it also comes with a working key lock. Finally, the title is clean and the truck wears whitewall tires that are class AF.

What could one spend on such a well-maintained and apparently still performing little pick-up? Especially someone used to the rusty buckets that are the norm in the northeast? The seller is asking $8,750 for title and now you have to decide if he should get it.
